From 2023: Mandatory measures to cut the carbon intensity of international shipping have been adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), setting shipping on a course to meet ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets.
IMO’s Carbon Intensity Index (CII) measures how efficiently a ship transports goods or passengers and is given in grams of CO2 emitted per cargo-carrying capacity and nautical mile. The rating thresholds will become increasingly stringent towards 2030.
Compliance can be achieved by various measures. Use of MAZ additive to improve combustion efficiency and reduce emissions may be the most favourable and cost efficient method with immediate effect.
